Here are your monthly tips for April:
1. Do not restrict yourself to buying annuals only in bloom. Petunias that bloom in packs are often root bound or overgrown. Plants without blossoms will actually bloom sooner and will grow better as well.
2. Now is a good time to trim down your grasses. Cut them down to a few inches above-ground, and divide clumps when the grass's growth begins to weaken.
3. Cut flower stalks back to the ground on daffodils, hyacinths, and other spring flowering bulbs as the flowers fade. Do not cut the foliage until it dies naturally. The leaves are necessary to produce strong bulbs capable of re-flowering.
4. Since butterfly bushes bloom on new growth, now is the best time to prune before new growth begins. Cut off the old stalks to within a few inches of the ground.
5. Now is a good time to dig and divide late-blooming perennials, such as asters and daylilies, when they begin emerging from the soil surface. Dig up the clump, and use a sharp spade to create pie-shaped wedges. Replant in a full-sun location and water often to keep soil moderately moist.
6. It is a great time to meet with your landscaper to get all the changes or additions scheduled. Now is a great time to plant!
