Here are your monthly tips for June:

1. Use mulch around young trees to protect them from lawn mower damage.

2. Remove old flower heads from annual bedding plants to keep them blooming.

3. Remove foliage from spring bulbs after it turns yellow and begins to dry. Pick colorful bedding plants to cover the bare spots being careful not to damage the bulbs.

4. Check all plants, especially newly planted ones (and don’t forget your potted plants too) for water on a regular basis. Water deeply and thoroughly as needed.

5. Fertilize flowering shrubs like Rhododendrons and Azaleas immediately after they have finished flowering with an acid loving fertilizer.

6. Keep your weeds pulled before they have a chance to flower and go to seed again. Otherwise, you will be fighting germinated weed seed for the next several years.

7.Change the water in your bird bath regularly. Standing water may become a breeding ground for mosquito larvae.

8.Continue to watch for insect or disease damage throughout the garden, and take the necessary steps to control the problem.
