Here are your monthly tips for May:
1. Do not give up on late blooming plants, such as Crape Myrtle and perennial Hibiscus. We have had cool Spring, so give them a chance to emerge now that the weather is warming.
2. Early flowering deciduous shrubs such as Forsythias, Weigela, and Spiraea should be pruned back when they have finished blooming. You can also prune Azaleas and Rhododendrons after they finish flowering, now is the best time to prune, so that buds can set for next year.
3. Keep an eye on your roses. Keep them sprayed for aphids and other pests and diseases such as black spot. Watering roses with soaker hoses or drip irrigation will reduce the spread of black spot disease.
4. Mulch around newly planted trees and shrubs. Besides the aesthetic appeal, this will help reduce weeds, controls fluctuations in soil temperature, retain moisture and help prevent damage from lawn mowers.
5. For maximum landscape interest in a small, vertical space, try annual or perennial vines. They can disguise ugly walls and fences. When trellised, they can create shade and privacy while also hiding undesirable views.
6. Plan a landscaping project on paper first. Do not over plant. Be sure you know the mature size of each plant and allow for growth. If you do not have the knowledge, be sure to hire an experienced landscaper than can fulfill your needs, and do not be afraid to ask questions.
